Visiting Itaipu: tours, prices and hours

Direct answer: Itaipu offers five tours. The Panoramic costs R$63 and shows the dam from the outside by bus (1h10). The Special Circuit goes inside the dam for R$185 (2h30). The Bela Vista Biological Refuge is R$48, Itaipu Illuminated is R$50 (Fridays and Saturdays only, at 7pm) and the Ecomuseum is free. The complex opens 8:30am to 4pm. Arrive 30 minutes early: departures are punctual.

Update (11/09/2026): Itaipu Illuminated is paused. The last show was on 8 August 2026 and the attraction is undergoing an LED lighting upgrade, expected back in 2027. Read about the pause.

Itaipu Binacional is the world's second largest hydroelectric dam by installed capacity and the second most visited attraction in Foz do Iguaçu, behind only the Falls. The most common mistake visitors make is assuming there is "a" tour: there are five, with different prices, durations and operating days, and choosing wrong costs you half a day.

Which one to pick

If you have half a day and have never seen Itaipu: the Panoramic. It is the tour that conveys the scale of the structure, on a double-decker bus, stopping at viewpoints with a view of the spillway. It sells the most and needs the least planning.

If you want to go inside the dam: the Special Circuit. It takes you through the interior to the powerhouse, where the generating units sit. There is an age restriction and you need photo ID. Slots are few and sell out in advance: buying on the day rarely works.

If you are travelling with children or want nature: the Bela Vista Refuge. It is a conservation area with rescued animals and nurseries, at a slower pace.

If you want the most striking tour: Itaipu Illuminated, Friday or Saturday at 7pm. The lit dam at night is the image people take home. It also has the fewest sessions in the week, so it fills up first.

If money is tight: the Ecomuseum is free and tells the story of the construction and its impact on the region.

Hours and how early to arrive

The complex runs 8:30am to 4pm, and the Ecomuseum and the Refuge close on Tuesdays. The first departure of the morning and mid-morning tend to be the quietest; traffic builds through the day and on public holidays. See the best time to visit Itaipu without queuing.

Arrive 30 minutes early. Buses leave on time and missing your slot means missing the tour, with no guaranteed rebooking.

Discounts and free entry

Half-price follows current rules: people with disabilities and, on the Special Circuit, students at Brazilian institutions, among other categories. Getting there

The Visitor Reception Centre is on Avenida Tancredo Neves, in the north of Foz, about 12 km from the centre. You can drive, use a ride-hailing app or take the city bus line that serves the avenue. The route detail is in how to get to the Itaipu Tourist Complex.

Can you combine it with the Falls in one day?

You can, but it is tight. The Falls sit on the opposite side of the city and need 3 to 4 hours. The combination that works is the Falls in the morning and the Itaipu Panoramic late afternoon, or the reverse. With the Special Circuit, which alone takes 2h30 plus travel, the day becomes too full.
