Brazil tests palm-print identification on Friendship Bridge

Pilot project in October recognizes pedestrians' palm biometrics in Foz do Iguaçu

A novel biometric identification system using palm prints begins testing in October on the International Friendship Bridge in Foz do Iguaçu. The pilot project, presented on Wednesday, September 30, initially operates only for those entering Brazil from Paraguay.

The technology records biometric characteristics of the palm and recognizes when the same person crosses the border on different dates and times. At this stage, however, the biometrics are not linked to the Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas (CPF), meaning the system detects repeated crossings but does not automatically associate the palm with the traveler’s civil identity.

According to the Federal Revenue Service, the choice of the International Friendship Bridge serves to assess the feasibility and efficiency of the system given the high daily flow of people between Foz do Iguaçu and Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. This is the first pilot project using the technology at a Brazilian border.

The Federal Revenue Service has not yet detailed how user registration will be handled when the system officially launches, nor whether biometric data will be shared with other public agencies. No timeline has been set for permanent operation.

Which direction does the test cover?
Initially, the project is intended only for pedestrians who leave Paraguay and enter Brazil.
When will the system become officially operational?
