Iguazu Falls at record flow: what this means for your visit

The measurement indicates that 8,663 m³ of water pass each second over the falls — the equivalent of 3.5 Olympic pools every second. This flow is at the top of the highest 2% of the historical series, the largest value recorded since 07/23/2026. When the flow is this high, the falls become fuller, the noise increases and the mist intensifies on the walkways.

For visitors, this means an even more impressive spectacle, but it also brings some precautions. In very high flows (top 5% of the series or ≥3 × the historical average of ~1,500 m³/s), the park usually closes the final walkway of the Devil's Throat temporarily for safety. Therefore, check the trail status in real time on the /cataratas-hoje site before you go.

In addition to safety, be prepared for higher humidity: bring a rain jacket, non-slip shoes and protect documents and electronics. The water volume can also generate longer lines at food areas and parking, so arrive early or consider visiting the Argentine side, where the flow tends to be more controlled.

What this means for you: with record-level flow, the Falls offer a unique view, but there is a risk of section closures and greater crowds. Plan to arrive early, wear waterproof clothing and confirm walkway openings before you go.
