Real strengthens in Argentina, weakens in Paraguay

Between June 9 and July 10, 2026, the purchasing power of the real varied considerably in the two neighboring countries of the Triple Frontier (Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay). In Argentina, the real appreciated 4.9% against the peso, meaning each real buys 4.9% more local goods and services. In Paraguay, the real depreciated 1.9% against the guarani, reducing what you can acquire per real.

These variations are important for those crossing the border to shop. If you plan to buy electronics or clothing in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, the weaker real means you will need more local currency or dollars to maintain the same purchasing power. Conversely, when crossing to Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, the real's appreciation allows you to buy more with the same amount of reais, making the country a more attractive option for cost-saving shoppers.

The dollar is quoted at R$ 5.11, a mid-range level in the 54-day series, indicating it is neither at a peak nor a trough. This reinforces that the purchasing-power difference between the two countries does not stem from extreme dollar fluctuations, but from the direct relationship of the real with the local currencies.

What this means for you: If your trip includes shopping, bring more cash or dollar-denominated cards for Paraguay, where the real is weaker, and take advantage of the appreciation in Argentina to buy more with fewer reais. Adjust your budget according to the currency you plan to use on each side of the border.
