Operation started early Sunday to control reservoir level after rains

The Itaipu power plant opened the spillway in the early hours of Sunday (13) in Foz do Iguaçu to control the reservoir level after water volume rose due to rain. The flow can reach 3,800 cubic meters per second in the afternoon.

The operation began at 1:50 a.m. Initially, only the left chute of the spillway was opened, releasing 1,700 m³/s. At 2:43 a.m., the flow increased to 3,100 m³/s.

According to Itaipu Binacional, the forecast is that the flow will reach 3,800 m³/s in the afternoon, before starting to decline later in the day. The spillway opening is related to rains in the Itaipu incremental basin—the area formed by rivers that flow directly into the hydroelectric reservoir.

The operation will continue as long as hydrological conditions justify controlling the reservoir level.
