Itaipu cuts electricity tariff after settling debt in 2023

Until the debt was settled, Itaipu's power was among the most expensive in distributors' portfolios. After February 2023, the situation reversed: the plant began offering one of the cheapest energies on the market.

In a recent tariff adjustment in Paraná, Itaipu's power entered the concessionaire's portfolio at R$ 207, below the average acquisition cost of energy (average ACR), which exceeds R$ 300. This gap helps contain consumer bill increases.

With the expansion of other renewable sources, Itaipu changed its function in the electric system. While in the 1980s and 1990s it accounted for almost 30% of Brazil's supply, today solar and wind represent about 40% of the country's installed capacity. The hydroelectric now provides security and stability during periods when these intermittent sources lower generation—especially at dusk, when solar production drops after 5 p.m.
