Because the plant runs on a run-of-the-river system, its storage capacity is limited: when the volume entering the lake exceeds the maximum that the generating units can process, the excess is released through the spillway.
The operation does not affect power generation for Brazil and Paraguay and follows technical dam-safety criteria according to water-flow variations. Residents and authorities can monitor the flow and the Paraná River levels downstream of the plant daily in the Hydrological Bulletin on the official Itaipu Binacional website.
