Itaipu Binacional sponsorship doubles number of participants by 2026
The Iate Clube Lago de Itaipu (ICLI), with support from Itaipu Binacional, expanded the Projeto Velejar é Preciso to serve 240 children and youth in Foz do Iguaçu by 2026. The program provides free transportation, meals, equipment, and instruction during training sessions held outside school hours.

The Iate Clube Lago de Itaipu (ICLI) has maintained, since 1999, the Projeto Velejar é Preciso aimed at children and youth in Foz do Iguaçu, especially from the Três Lagoas and Portal da Foz neighborhoods. Itaipu Binacional’s sponsorship for the years 2024 to 2026 allows the number of participants to grow from 120 to 240.
The funds are allocated to the purchase of boats and equipment, uniforms, transportation, meals, scholarships, educational training, and participation in national and international competitions. Trainings take place after school and include students from municipal and state school systems. Young people who stand out may join the main team and compete in regional, state, and national championships.
The technical staff consists of 10 collaborators, most of them former club sailors, plus more than 30 employees who support the athletes in sports, academic, vocational, and psychosocial aspects. The project also offers workshops on social values, Olympism, and sustainability, aiming at job market insertion and the development of discipline and cooperation.
