How much to tip in Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay

Direct answer: In all three countries tipping is custom, not obligation. In Brazil a 10% service charge is usually suggested on the bill and can be removed. In Argentina it is not added to the bill, the custom is around 10%, and since Decree 731/2024 it can be paid by card or digital wallet. In Paraguay it is less widespread.

Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu)

Bills usually arrive with a 10% service charge already added. It is not mandatory: customers can ask for it to be removed, and that is not taken as an insult. In practice most people pay it when service was good.

Argentina (Puerto Iguazú)

The tip is not added to the bill, and the custom is to leave around 10%. It was always cash, and that is where the news is: Decree 731/2024 enabled electronic tipping, by debit card, credit card or digital wallet, in bars, restaurants, hotels and delivery services.

Two points of the rule that matter for visitors:

• The amount is free. The business must guarantee the customer's choice of both method and amount.
• It remains voluntary. Tipping is not mandatory in Argentina; it is a deep-rooted custom in hospitality and transport.

This is where tipping is least widespread of the three. Larger restaurants sometimes include a service charge on the bill; where they do not, rounding up or leaving around 10% is well received but not expected as a rule.
