Where to exchange money on the border and where the real is accepted

The real circulates on all three sides; guaraní and peso for local daily life
In the Triple Frontier, the real is accepted in nearly all of Ciudad del Este's commerce and in much of Puerto Iguazú, often at a reasonable rate. For small purchases, transport and food in Paraguay it's worth having guaraníes; in Argentina, pesos. There are exchange offices on both sides of the bridges — check the day's rate before exchanging.
Where the real is accepted:
- Ciudad del Este (Paraguay): nearly all commerce accepts cash reais, and more and more stores accept Pix. On large purchases, paying in reais or dollars usually gives a better return.
- Puerto Iguazú (Argentina): many tourist shops accept reais, but the rate varies; for taxis, buses and small stores, the peso is more practical.
Where to exchange:
- Exchange offices at the heads of the bridges (Brazilian side and the other side) — compare the rate, it changes throughout the day
- In Paraguay, the casas de cambio in downtown CDE tend to have a good guaraní rate
- Avoid exchanging at the airport (worse rate)
Cash vs. card vs. Pix:
- Cash (reais or dollars): best for negotiating price, especially in CDE
- International card: accepted at established stores, with IOF; global accounts (Wise/Nomad) have a better exchange rate
- Pix: advancing fast in Paraguay — you pay in reais and the merchant receives in guaraníes
