Tourist access restricted after river exceeds 12,000 m³/s
Argentine authorities temporarily closed tourist access to Iguazu Falls on Monday, October 12, 2026, due to the river’s flood. The river surpassed 12,000 cubic meters per second, more than six times its historical average.

The authorities of Iguazu National Park and the concessionaire restricted access to the tourist sectors of the falls after the river exceeded 12,000 m³/s.
On Monday, the park reported a “gradual decline” in flow, allowing the restriction to be lifted starting Tuesday.
Provisional closures also occurred in 2023 and 2024, when walkways at Devil’s Throat were removed as a preventive measure amid another El Niño episode.
Meteorologists warned that the current El Niño could become the strongest ever observed.
According to the National Meteorological Service of Argentina, until September the coastal region showed precipitation excesses similar to the average of strong El Niño events, with the excesses starting small and increasing throughout the year, especially in the southern summer and autumn.
The binational entity responsible for the Yacyretá dam reported that the Paraná River’s flow was 37% above historical average in September and 40% above in October.
The rise of the Uruguay River led to the evacuation of dozens of people in the coastal areas of Concordia (Entre Ríos province) and Paso de los Libres (Corrientes province), as municipal statements released on Monday by local press.
