Waterfalls at peak: flow of 2,401 m³/s makes water more powerful

The official measurement shows a flow of 2,401 m³/s (level 185 cm) at the Falls, which equals 1.6 times the historic average of 1,500 m³/s – about 2.4 million liters per second. Visually, that corresponds to roughly one Olympic-size swimming pool every 1.0 second, or 240 water-truck loads per second, and in about 12 hours the flow would generate enough water to meet roughly five times the daily water consumption of the entire population of Foz do Iguaçu (285 thousand residents).

The current is well above normal, but it does not reach extreme levels (such as the record of about 4,300 m³/s recorded in 2014). During strong floods, the park usually keeps the observation decks open, while the final section of the walkway may be closed for safety – a decision announced by the park itself. Therefore, before you go, check the walkway status at /cataratas-hoje.

The water appears brown due to sediment brought by rain in the basin, not because of dirt. It is worth noting that the flood has no relation to the Itaipu Dam, which is on the Paraná River and does not control the volume of the Falls.

What this means for you: The water’s force is high, ideal for those who want to feel the power of the drops, but there may be restrictions on access to the end of the walkway. Arrive early, enjoy the observation decks, and verify the walkway status before planning your visit.
