Waterfalls high: flow of 2,401 m³/s makes water more powerful

The official measurement shows a flow of 2,401 m³/s (level 185 cm) at the Falls, which equals 1.6 times the historic average of 1,500 m³/s – about 1.5 million liters per second. Visually, that corresponds to roughly one Olympic-size swimming pool every 1.0 second, or 240 water-tanker trucks per second, and in 18 seconds the water consumed by the entire population of Foz do Iguaçu (285 thousand residents) passes over the falls.

The current stream is well above normal, but it does not reach extreme levels (such as the record 46,300 m³/s in 2014). During a strong flood, the park usually keeps the viewpoints open, while the final section of the walkway may be closed for safety – a decision announced by the park itself. Therefore, before you go, check the walkway status at /cataratas-hoje.

The water appears brown due to sediment brought by rain in the basin, not because of dirt. It is worth noting that the flood is not related to the Itaipu Dam, which is on the Paraná River and does not control the volume of the Falls.

What this means for you: The water’s force is high, ideal for those who want to feel the power of the drops, but access to the end of the walkway may be restricted. Arrive early, enjoy the viewpoints, and verify the walkway status before planning your visit.
