Waterfalls with flow of 3,342 m³/s: what to expect this week

Today's measurement indicates 3,342 m³/s (level 220 cm), which corresponds to 2.2 times the historic average of 1,500 m³/s – about 1.5 million liters per second, or roughly ≈ 1.3 Olympic-size swimming pools crashing per second. This flow is among the top 5% of values ever recorded in the Marco Três series (since June 2026), signaling a strong flood phase.

During intense floods, mist on the walkways increases and the water volume over the falls creates an even more impressive spectacle. Viewpoints remain open, but the final section of the Devil's Throat walkway may be temporarily closed for safety, according to the park’s decision on the day. The water may appear brown due to sediment carried by rain in the basin, which is natural and does not indicate dirt. Remember that the flood is unrelated to the Itaipu dam, which is on the Paraná River and does not control the Iguaçu flow.

• Plan to arrive early to secure tickets and avoid lines, since visits may be more crowded.
