Itaipu generated 233 GWh on August 5, 2026 – 13% above average

The measurement from the National System Operator (ONS) indicates that on August 5, 2026, the Itaipu Dam produced 233 GWh (gigawatt-hour, a unit that represents the energy needed to power 1 billion watts for one hour). Of this total, 65% was allocated to Brazil’s National Interconnected System and 35% to Paraguay, according to the binational split of the plant.

The generation was 13% above the historic average of 207 GWh/day, meaning the reservoir was at a favorable level and the flow of the Paraná River allowed a performance higher than usual. Each GWh is equivalent to the daily consumption of roughly 200,000 homes, so on that day the electricity produced was enough to supply about 46 million households for an entire day.
