Real loses 3% purchasing power in Paraguay

Between July 15, 2026 and August 15, 2026 the real lost 3% of its value against the guarani, reducing the purchasing power of Brazilians who cross the border to shop. At the same time, the dollar rose to R$ 5.18, a level that is among the highest in the 90-day series tracked by Marco Três, indicating a period of weakness for the real.

A 3% depreciation means that, to buy the same good in guaranis, the Brazilian tourist will need to spend R$ 3 more for every R$ 100 spent. In practice, if an electronic item previously cost 200,000 ₲ (about R$ 30), it will now cost roughly 206,000 ₲ (about R$ 31). The same effect applies to clothing, electronics and other popular products in the stores of Ciudad del Este.

For those who plan to carry cash, the real’s decline can make it less advantageous to exchange large amounts before the trip, since the exchange rate is unfavorable. It is advisable to compare rates at official exchange houses at the border and consider using credit or debit cards, which usually apply the day’s rate with a lower spread.

What this means for you: the 3% depreciation of the real suggests you should budget with an extra margin, prioritize card payments (which follow the daily rate) and check the exchange rate at border exchange houses before converting money.
