Real down 3.2% in Paraguay, dollar R$5.22 – border buying impact

Between September 4 and October 5 2026, the purchasing power of the real in Paraguay (measured in guaraníes) fell 3.2% – meaning the real yields less when converted. In the same period, the real also dropped 1.5% in Argentina.

The dollar rate used as reference was US$ 1 = R$ 5.22, which is among the highest values in our 141-day series, indicating a moment of weakness for the real. In addition, R$ 1 = 1.121 guaraníes and R$ 1 = 292 Argentine pesos. Guaraní is Paraguay’s currency and Argentine peso is Argentina’s; the rates show how many of those currencies are obtained per real.

For those crossing the border to shop, the depreciation means Brazilian money buys fewer products in guaraníes and pesos. If you previously exchanged R$ 100 for about 112 guaraníes, you will now receive roughly 108 guaraníes. The same applies to Argentina, where R$ 100 now yields about 29,200 pesos, less than before.

What this means for you:

• Bring a larger amount in reais or exchange before crossing, as the rate may become even less favorable.
• Check the day’s exchange rate at exchange houses or apps before buying, especially for electronics or clothing that are usually priced in guaraníes.
• Consider paying in dollars (US$) when possible, since the dollar is high in reais but may be more stable against the guaraní.
