Service avoids travel to Curitiba for regional patients
Foz do Iguaçu began offering botulinum toxin injections to treat spasticity. Health professionals from the municipality and surrounding area took part in technical training on Tuesday, July 7, to qualify the team.

The service operates at the Specialized Rehabilitation Center (CER IV) and benefits patients from municipalities linked to the 9th Health Regional, eliminating the need to travel to the state capital.
According to Renata Carvalho, head of the Division of People with Disabilities and Mental Health, the procedure represents a local innovation. Previously, residents had to travel to Curitiba. The injection is performed by a physician but involves a multiprofessional team to ensure comprehensive care.
Spasticity is characterized by increased muscle stiffness, often resulting from cerebral palsy or the aftermath of a stroke. The treatment is provided free of charge by the Unified Health System (SUS) for children and adults.
Ana Fanger Betelli, Access and Institutional Relations manager at Ipsen Laboratory, highlighted that the procedure improves quality of life and facilitates the work of follow‑up teams.
The training was conducted by physiatrist Chiara Crema and pediatric orthopedic surgeon Marcel Stathacos. The program included theoretical sessions with a multidisciplinary team followed by practical applications on patients.
Sheila Souza Arregue, grandmother of Matheus, an 8‑year‑old followed at CER IV with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, expressed positive expectations. The family does not expect a cure, but believes the treatment will increase autonomy in daily activities.
