Light display will undergo technological upgrade lasting a year
The light show that illuminates the Itaipu dam in Foz do Iguaçu is giving its final performance this Saturday (8) before a pause for modernization. The current system will be replaced with LED technology for roughly a year.

The attraction has been operating for almost 24 years and is concluding its season this weekend. During the pause, the entire lighting infrastructure will be renewed.
The equipment currently in use relies on metal-halide lamps, whose production has been discontinued by manufacturers. This has made it difficult to replace damaged parts. The new solution retains the original 829 lighting points and preserves the visual design created by designer Peter Gasper.
With LED, color and intensity control will be managed through a digital panel, eliminating the need for manual lamp changes. Similar technology is already in use on structures such as the Empire State Building and Notre Dame Cathedral.
At present, the show runs only on Fridays and Saturdays. After reopening, the Itaipu Tourism Initiatives Division plans to expand to four or five days a week. According to manager Aline Teigão, the expansion could increase tourists' stay in Foz do Iguaçu, which still lacks nighttime tour options.
Since 2007, the attraction has welcomed 486,041 visitors. In the first months of 2026, it had already counted 13,536 people. Installation of the new system is expected to take about a year.
