Itaipu Maintains Water Control with Gate Adjustments

Itaipu Binacional maintains permanent monitoring of the water volume in the Itaipu reservoir, adjusting gate operations to keep the level under control. The maneuvers are carried out in response to rainfall behavior and the amount of water flowing from the upper river.

After the rains recorded in recent weeks, the Binational adopted a regulation scheme that includes temporary spillway openings to control the reservoir level and match the stored volume to hydrological conditions. The operation is not permanent nor with a fixed flow; the gates are opened and closed according to the amount of water entering the reservoir, forecasts of further precipitation, and the electricity generation needs of Paraguay and Brazil.

Itaipu reported that the spillways recorded discharges of up to 6,000 cubic meters per second in recent weeks. Regulation intensified from September 13, when increased water inflows caused by rain raised the reservoir level. The first opening occurred in the early hours of that day, and since then technicians have modified the spill scheme according to the water behavior reaching the dam.

One of the main parameters monitored is the reservoir level. Itaipu sets a reference maximum of approximately 220.50 meters above sea level, aiming to keep the reservoir within the planned limits and prevent water inflow from exceeding the system's regulation capacity.

The plant is located on the border between Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, and Ciudad del Este, Paraguay.
