Derramadero libera hasta 11,3 millones de litros por segundo el miércoles (14)
Itaipu Binacional opened the second channel of its spillway on Tuesday, 13 October, after more rain than expected fell on the Iguazú basin and the reservoir. The release rose from 10.5 to 11.3 million liters per second between 11 am and noon, while civil defense and Itaipu's social team monitor at-risk areas.
Itaipu Binacional opened the second channel of its spillway on Tuesday, 13 October, because the Iguazú River basin and the dam's reservoir received more rain than forecast and the surplus had to be released in a controlled way. The spillway has three channels, each with 14 gates.
According to the dam, the opening does not significantly change the flood risk: the release went from 10.5 to 11.3 million liters per second between 11 am and noon.
Who is at risk
- Ciudad del Este: in the San Rafael neighborhood, by the river, about 170 families were evacuated with support from Itaipu's social responsibility team.
- Foz do Iguaçu: civil defense is monitoring the Iguazú and Paraná rivers. The most affected spots tend to be the Porto Meira sand port, the Catamarã, the Iate Clube Cataratas and the Clube Amambay, where there are no homes.
Itaipu notes that the region's biggest floods were in 1992, 1983 and 2014: see the ranking.
