Itaipú Binacional project stays on schedule despite regional rains

The construction of the viaduct at kilometer 10 in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, has reached 65% physical progress, according to the Superintendency of Works and Development of Itaipú Binacional. Fully funded by the binational entity, the project remains on schedule despite precipitation that affected some sections.

The road project includes building a grade-separated intersection and access roads to improve connectivity in the area. On Avenue Km 10 Monday, 500 meters of stone paving have been completed and asphalt work is underway. Simultaneously, base work and paving continue on the North and South collector roads, as well as drainage and earthmoving on kilometers 11 and 12.

On the main structure, the technical team finished installing the longitudinal beams of the North and South viaducts, pouring the concrete slabs and installing New Jersey-type safety barriers. Current efforts focus on shaping the access ramps and constructing the east-side return.

Constant rains caused delays in the collector streets, sidewalks and bike paths, but the elevated viaduct infrastructure was not affected. In the coming days, drainage and base work will continue on the Kilometer 11 collectors, along with progress on grass areas and sidewalk layout. The plan includes consolidating ramp slopes and final paving of the connector arterials on Avenue Monday.

The Acaray-Tocsa Consortium is carrying out the work under supervision of a joint technical board with engineers from Itaipú and Paraguay’s Ministry of Public Works and Communications. When completed, the viaduct will reduce inter-city traffic congestion and improve road safety for thousands of drivers who use Route PY02 daily.
