Training in Paraguay aims to improve public health data quality

Final-year medical students participated in a workshop on birth and death certification in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, between July 20-22. The Ministry of Health initiative aims for future professionals to incorporate best practices from university onwards.

The training brought together students from public and private universities, doctors from Family Health Units, medical directors, forensic medicine specialists, statisticians and Civil Registry officials in Alto Paraná.

During the meeting, the Manual of Norms and Procedures for Recording Vital Facts Information was presented. Participants conducted practical exercises on the correct completion of live birth and death certificates, analyzing real cases with frequent certification errors.

According to the General Directorate of Strategic Health Information (DIGIES), the objective is for new doctors to begin their professional lives with solid knowledge about vital facts documentation, becoming promoters of best practices in public and private institutions. Accurate certification allows for obtaining a reliable diagnosis of the country's health reality, according to the director of the Tenth Health Region.

The action is part of the five-year Strategic Plan for Vital Statistics, promoted by the Ministry of Health with support from Vital Strategies and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The project plans to progressively incorporate this training into the curriculum of the country's Medical schools.
