Yacyretá opens gates due to increased flow of the Paraná

Measure responds to tributary flow of approximately 28,000 m³/s due to El Niño rains
On October 12, 2026, the Yacyretá power plant in Corrientes, Argentina, opened the gates of its main spillway to mitigate the rise in the Paraná River flow. The measure responds to a tributary flow of about 28,000 m³/s, driven by rains associated with the El Niño phenomenon.

The Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Plant opened the gates of its main spillway to lessen the impacts caused by the significant increase in discharges from upstream dams and the intense rains recorded in the Paraná River basin.
According to Engineer Ronnie Ayala, head of the Technical Department on the Right Bank, the tributary flow reaches approximately 28,000 m³/s, a value that results from the sum of about 9,000 m³/s coming from the Iguazú River basin (where rains exceeded five times the forecasted volume, raising the flow from 1,500 m³/s to 9,000 m³/s) and roughly 19,000 m³/s from the Itaipú power plant.
Ayala emphasized that the operations are not the cause of possible floods, but rather an exogenous natural phenomenon that the plant tries to mitigate. He stated that without the dam, the effect would be the same or perhaps greater.
Yacyretá’s Technical Department, through its Hydrology area, will continue constant monitoring of the Paraná River’s hydrological situation to keep civil society and the competent authorities informed.
