Freshwater beaches on Lake Itaipu: where they are and what to check first

Where they are

Lake Itaipu is the reservoir formed by the dam on the Paraná river, and its shoreline runs through several towns in western Paraná. The artificial beaches were built along those shores, outside Foz:

• Santa Terezinha de Itaipu: the beach sits on the lake shore, about 14 km from the town centre, with a camping area, sports facilities, water activities, walking trails and sport fishing.
• Itaipulândia: an artificial beach 700 metres long. The Jacutinga bathing area occupies a peninsula surrounded by the lake, ringed by native forest reaching 400 metres wide in places.

What to confirm before you set out

This is the part most articles on the subject leave out: the beaches are not permanently open for swimming. Authorisation depends on water conditions, and there have been episodes of closure followed by reopening to bathers.
