Palm Biometrics on the Friendship Bridge: How It Works

How the new system works

Upon arrival at the border, travelers encounter kiosks with biometric readers. The device captures palm characteristics and logs the date and time of the crossing. The system detects if the same biometrics have been used in previous crossings.

In this initial phase, however, recognition operates in isolation: the machine identifies repetition but does not tie the information to the person’s name or identity. In the coming months, the Receita Federal will assess technical, operational, legal, and data-protection aspects before deciding on full project expansion. No deadline has been set.

Crossing procedure

All pedestrians crossing the bridge must use the kiosk. The traveler answers a question about purchases and the exemption quota. Those with items to declare are directed to inspection. Those within the US$ 500 per person limit (current quota for land travel) place their palm on the reader and proceed.

The Receita Federal hopes to streamline the process, but there is no forecast yet on whether queues will be affected. Biometric control does not change existing customs declaration, documentation, or migration protocols.
