Gasoline at the border: is it worth fueling in Argentina?

The ANP average for regular gasoline in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, was R$ 6.43 per liter in the week of July 19-25, 2026, virtually unchanged from the previous week (R$ 6.42). Premium gasoline – fuel used in some vehicles in Argentina – was quoted at 2,276 pesos per liter, which, using the informal market rate (1 US$ = 1,560 ARS) and the official exchange rate (1 US$ = R$ 5.09), corresponds to R$ 7.43 per liter. This conversion shows that fueling on the Argentine side is 16% more costly than in Brazil.

Why the difference matters: fuel price directly affects travel costs, especially for those planning long trips between Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazú and Ciudad del Este. Even if the per-liter difference seems small, covering 300 km (about 30 liters for an average car) can add nearly R$ 30 in extra expense.

How the conversion was done: Argentine pesos were first converted to dollars (1,560 ARS/US$) and then to reais (R$ 5.09/US$). This rate reflects the informal market value commonly used by travelers exchanging money at the border.

What to watch in practice: despite the higher price, some drivers prefer to fuel in Argentina for convenience or because stations are closer to Puerto Iguazú’s center. However, the risk of queues and the need to pay in pesos or dollars can make the stop less attractive.

What this means for you: if your plan includes driving between Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú, fuel up in Foz to save up to R$ 30 for a 300-km trip. Check local prices before you leave and, if you need to buy fuel in Argentina, be prepared to pay a 16% higher amount.
