Flow almost nine times the average of Iguazu Falls

On Thursday (15), the Itaipu dam in Foz do Iguaçu (PR) put two spillway gates into operation, raising the discharge to 12.9 million liters per second. The measure was taken to adjust the reservoir level and did not affect power supply to Brazil or Paraguay.

The central gate was activated to control the water level in the reservoir, keeping the Paraná River at 121 meters above sea level in the monitored area. The left gate was already open, and the combination of the two resulted in a flow almost nine times higher than the historic average of Iguazu Falls (1.5 million L/s).

The spillway has been operating continuously since September 30 and will remain open as long as the volume of water entering the reservoir requires release. According to Itaipu Binacional, the operation does not interfere with electricity generation, which continues to meet the demand of Brazil and Paraguay normally.
