President Highlights Renewable and Nuclear Projects for Paraguay’s Future
Yesterday, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña visited the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric plant accompanied by U.S. Under Secretary of State Christopher Landau. At the occasion, the president announced plans to install solar panels, build internal dams, and incorporate small modular nuclear plants into the national energy mix.

During the visit to the Itaipu Binacional hydroelectric plant, President Santiago Peña emphasized the importance of diversifying Paraguay’s energy matrix. He pointed to the installation of solar panels driven by the entity itself as an immediate alternative and mentioned the construction of dams on internal rivers, as well as new projects on the Paraná River in partnership with Argentina.
Peña also announced that "it won’t take long" for the country to incorporate small modular nuclear plants into its energy scheme, citing the presence of an American company with uranium exploration rights in national territory.
Industry and Commerce Minister Marco Riquelme supported the proposal and stressed the need to combine photovoltaic technology in the reservoir with agreements with Argentina for pipeline installation and thermal boost, aiming to ensure stable supply for industrial development. The head of the commercial portfolio highlighted the strategic value of national resources versus fossil fuels, stating that "our oil is electricity."
