How to cross between Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú by bus

Direct answer: The international bus leaves from the TTU terminal in central Foz, hourly, and reaches central Puerto Iguazú in about 30 minutes, plus border time. Rio Uruguay runs from 7:30am to 6:30pm. It costs R$10 to R$15, payable in reais, pesos or dollars. At Argentine customs everyone gets off for immigration: bring a valid photo ID or passport — a driving licence does not count.

It is the cheapest way to cross and the only one that works door to door without a car: you board in central Foz and get off in central Puerto Iguazú, metres from the restaurants and the craft market.

Where to catch it

The stop is the TTU (Urban Transport Terminal), on Avenida Juscelino Kubitschek in central Foz. The international line stops on the outer side of the terminal, not at the urban platforms — waiting on the wrong side is a common mistake.

What happens at the border

This is the part that surprises first-timers.

The bus stops at Brazilian and Argentine customs, and all passengers get off for immigration. It takes about 10 minutes when there is no queue. The bus waits for its own passengers.

If immigration takes longer than the bus can wait, your ticket normally remains valid for the next bus from the same company — keep the receipt and confirm with the driver as you step off.

On the Argentine side passports are no longer stamped: the record has been digital since 2022. That alarms people expecting a stamp, but it is the correct procedure.

Documents

A valid photo ID or passport. Under the Mercosur agreement, Brazilians do not need a passport to enter Argentina as tourists. A driving licence does not count as a travel document. Children and teenagers have their own rules.

When the bus is not the best choice

• In a hurry or outside operating hours: taxi or remis work, but cost far more.
• By car: more freedom, but the customs queue on weekends and holidays eats the time you saved. In a rental car, confirm with the company whether the contract allows leaving the country — most do not.
• By app: not possible. Uber and 99 do not cross the border (why).
