Mental health center participates in the event for the first time with therapeutic workshops

The Dr. Douglas Bittencourt Alcohol and Drugs III Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS AD III) presented its users' productions at the 21st International Book Fair of Foz do Iguaçu, which concluded on Sunday, September 6. The exhibition featured works from therapeutic workshops and a publication developed in partnership with the Foz Fazendo Arte program.

CAPS AD III's participation marked the first time the service was included in the Fair's program. The exhibition gathered creations made by users in the workshops, highlighting a fanzine that translates, in words and images, the possibilities of mental health care. Visitors were able to take the publication home as a souvenir.

According to Tatiana Lopes, manager of CAPS AD III, the presence at the event served as an opportunity to show the community the potential of the people served by the center. She said the initiative helps dismantle stereotypes: many associate CAPS only with a crisis space, without recognizing that it functions as a mental health service where seeking help is appropriate and necessary.

The therapeutic workshops use varied media—art, colors, drawings, and literature—as tools for expression. These instruments allow users to communicate feelings and experiences in ways that go beyond speech.

Dulce Maria Brito Abreu, a 65-year-old visitor from São Paulo, an art enthusiast and art-therapy student, emphasized the power of artistic expressions. For her, images and colors access the subconscious more directly than words, which carry a higher level of conscious elaboration. Abreu was attending the Fair for the first time and was impressed by its public and accessible format, which offered lectures, music, literary performances, and book access for children.
