Bookmark making, binding, mini-books and creative writing attract audiences of all ages
The 21st International Book Fair in Foz do Iguaçu offered, on Saturday (September 5), four free workshops from the Foz Fazendo Arte program for children, youth and adults. The activities allowed participants to learn book-making techniques and create their own reading-related objects.

Four hands-on activities ran simultaneously at the Fair. Art educator Eliane Vogado led a bookmark-making workshop using paper embroidery, a technique that lets diverse audiences — from children to seniors — produce their own bookmarks.
Journalist and writer Daniela Valente taught how to make mini-books, encouraging participants to start their own stories. She said the proposal broke down the idea that writing and publishing are distant processes.
The binding workshop presented the basic steps of the craft: punching holes, tying knots and threading. The activity is aimed at those who want to write, create their own booklets and customize them, a skill often used in creative writing.
Participants also attended a creative-writing workshop, completing the day’s program.
Who participated
Amanda Golindano Veles, 9, chose to create a heart-shaped bookmark and took home a children’s book to read to her pregnant mother. Photographer Kharolyne Holler, passionate about hand-crafts, made a bookmark with neutral-colored sheets.
Mariana Pães Aragão, 5, was among the youngest participants and focused on making mini-books. Victoria Mary Leon, a 28-year-old biotechnology student, joined the binding workshop alongside her mother. Designer Isabela Souza da Silva, 25, said her first encounter with binding was a challenge and she plans to keep practicing at home.
Press officer Paulo Eduardo Garcia took part in the mini-book workshop and highlighted that the experience makes writing more democratic and accessible, dispelling the myth that publishing is unattainable.
Upcoming activities
The Fair continues on Sunday (September 6) at Praça da Paz with free programming for the whole family.
