Hotel and Gastronomy Workers' Day in Puerto Iguazú

The celebration takes place on August 2, a date that recalls the creation of the Argentine Workers Federation of the Hotel Industry (FOAIH) in 1948. Since then, the organization underwent name changes, becoming in 1955 the Union of Gastronomic Workers of the Argentine Republic (UTGRA) and, in 2004, the current Union of Tourism, Hospitality and Gastronomy Workers of the Argentine Republic (UTHGRA), accumulating more than 95 years of union history.

Collective bargaining agreements in the sector officially recognize August 2 as Hotel and Gastronomy Workers' Day. The date also serves to draw attention to working conditions such as night shifts, weekends, holidays and high season, as well as the need for labor rights, rest periods, training and safe environments.

In Puerto Iguazú, where tourism is one of the pillars of the local economy, training includes safe food handling, cold-chain management, hygiene, accident prevention, service to people with allergies or disabilities, language skills and knowledge of regional products. The recognition aims to value the effort of waiters, chefs, receptionists, housekeepers, bartenders and other professionals who sustain the city's tourism industry.
