Youth Games Materials Turned into Benches in Foz do Iguaçu

The Municipal Environment Secretariat, partner of the Youth Games CAIXA 2026, is repurposing approximately two tons of materials used in the event’s scenography. The materials – tarps, bagum, fabrics and wind banners – are shredded, agglomerated and pressed into molds that produce ten park benches, which will remain as an environmental legacy.

Waste manager Felipe Pedroso de Oliveira explained that after identifying what can be reused, the material goes through shredding, agglomeration and pressing, resulting in a mass that can be molded into different products, in this case, benches.

The benches will be installed in city squares, with signage indicating they were produced from recycled material, aiming to raise public awareness about the importance of proper waste separation.

During the 16 days of competition, all generated waste receives proper disposal: organic waste is converted into fertilizer for rural producers and community gardens, while recyclables – plastic, aluminum, cans and cardboard – are sent to recycling cooperatives.

The department head, Johnys Freitas, emphasized the need for proper disposal, especially during periods of heavy rain, and said reports can be made through the e-Ouve app or by calling 156.
